2012
Well, it's officially 2012 and I've had a couple of weeks for the new year to sink in. I've been reflecting a lot on last year and working to come up with a reasonable list of goals for this New Year. I really hate to call them resolutions because those seem to have an implied sense of doom. (I mean, who REALLY keeps them?) So, I'm calling them "goals." That will help, right?
Last year, my business really started demanding a lot of my time. (Or, I started putting the time into it to make it take off, whichever way you want to look at it.) I had a lot of issues with balance last year. I struggled to feel like I was getting everything done and giving the right amount of attention to the right thing, at the right time. I worked to adjust to being a mom of two and to having a baby again--a huge change from Logan who was potty trained, sleeping 12+ hours at night and in school 2 days a week. I struggled to fit in time for much of anything. I worked so hard to figure this out and by the end of the year, I was much closer to achieving balance. My main focus for this year is to keep it up! Here are a few things that I am focusing on:
Family Goals:
- Pick a chapter book per month to read aloud to the boys during the day/Logan at night. (We've already started this and it's going really well! I read to Logan every other night when I put him to bed and Shane reads something different on his night. They read Charlotte's Web in the fall and Logan loved it.)
- Switch off with Shane so that we can put Graham to bed every other night. (We're already doing this with Logan and will start this with Graham soon.)
- Keep my phone on charger, off or away from me more during the day. (Enough said. I'm WAY too attached to my iphone.)
- Start doing activities (play groups, story time, etc.) with Graham while Logan is in school. (I took him to the 24 months and younger story time last week and the really liked it! We are definitely going to make this a weekly thing.)
- Pick a family game night and make it a priority. (We love games but Logan really looks forward to having a certain night that we do this.)
- Continue to meal plan and work harder to have dinner ready by 6pm every night. Our evenings go by WAY to fast. Both boys are asleep early--Graham by 7pm and Logan by 8pm, so if dinner gets delayed....everything is delayed.
- Have the kitchen clean before starting work every night. (This is making a HUGE difference in how I feel. It's SO easy to want to rush right into work as soon as the boys are down, but now I'm taking an extra few minutes to make sure that we get it cleaned up. A lot of times Shane and I trade off on cooking/cleaning up, so that helps, too.)
Personal Goals:
- Read one book per month (Currently reading Entreleadership, by Dave Ramsey.) "In five years, you will be the same person you are today except for the books you read and the people you meet."
- Work on sleeping in between 12am-7:30am consistently most nights, except for the 1 day per week that I sleep in. I think that would be awesome to do consistently. My sleep schedule is really crazy, but much better now that Graham is sleeping through the night. I'm a changed woman being able to sleep 6-7 straight hours at night. I think I do better being on a consistent schedule versus having 1-2 nights I stay up super late and 1-2 nights that I go to bed early.
- Prioritize 1 mom's night out per month, for me, either with friends or family
So far, I feel like implementing all of this has been really great! I also have many financial (personal & business) and also just general business goals, but I'm not going to post those here. I will say that my business is doing great this month, yet I feel like I've had a lot of down time and time off. I think that I'm finally getting the hang of this!
