Baby Background

So....now you all know that I'm pregnant! But, I've been getting a lot of questions for more details. Here you go!

Shane and I always knew that we wanted another baby and also knew that we wanted our kids about 3 1/2 years apart. Since I had kind of a complicated pregnancy with Logan, I wanted him to be old enough to get in and out of his bed, be potty trained (fingers crossed!) and overall, just old enough to do some things on his own by the time I was far along in the pregnancy and might be on bedrest. And, since I breastfed Logan over a year, I wanted an entire year where I wasn't pregnant or nursing. I was NOT one of those women who lost all of my baby weight while nursing. I held onto those last few pounds until I weaned him, and as much as I loved nursing, I never felt like my body was back to being mine until I was done. I also wanted to wait until I had that "itch" for another one. I wanted to really be ready for another baby and feel as excited about the new baby as I was when I got pregnant with Logan. Oh, and I did not want to have the baby before Sept 1st so that he/she would miss the school cut off for the year. I didn't want to have an August baby that was the youngest of the class. (Logan will be on the younger side with a May birthday and I'm a little worried about that.) With delivering Logan 4 weeks early, that meant that I did not want a due date before October 1st because of the chance I could deliver early. (Whew. I'm demanding aren't I?!?)

So, we started trying in January and got really lucky to get pregnant the next month in February. I suspected that I was pregnant almost immediately (just like I did with Logan.) I took a test 3 days before I missed my period on February 11th and BAM. Positive! It is just so amazing to be able to find out so early now. We had our first doctor appointment on Feb 26th when I was just under 6 weeks pregnant. They did an ultrasound and we were already able to see the heartbeat. We were so excited but still nervous to get through the entire first trimester. I had to wait a LONG 6 weeks until my appointment last week when I found out everything was going beautifully.

I'm seeing a high risk doctor here who was recommended by my ob/gyn in Arkansas. The hospital I will deliver in has a level 3 NICU which is the highest level you can find. (There are a few level 4's in the US but it's not common.) My doctor has recommended we do weekly progesterone shots starting at 16 weeks (my next appointment) to try to keep this baby in there until at least 38 weeks. As inconvenient as weekly shots at the doctor's office will be for 20+ weeks, I will do anything to attempt to avoid the NICU. Most of you remember that I went into labor around 34-35 weeks and we were able to hold it off until 36 weeks. My doctor's do not think this was related to the placenta previa and bleeding that I had early on with Logan. My new OB does not expect me to have another previa, so I'm very hopeful that this will be an uneventful pregnancy. I'll find out the sex of the baby in 8 weeks at my 20 week checkup. I am pretty sure that it's a girl. A lot of other people think it's a girl. But, I would love another little boy too, and a healthy baby is good with us!

  1. Yay! I'm still going for naming HER Emery so we can be related one day and have the awkward name situation. :)
