Logan's Big Boy Bed

We've been talking for awhile about upgrading Logan's room to a more "big boy" one. He was doing fine in his toddler bed, but since we moved into the new house his room has zero personality. In our old house, we had just switched out his crib with a toddler bed, but I didn't wanted to paint and decorate his new room the way that his nursery was. So, his room has been in limbo since we bought this house. Last weekend we were out shopping and all three fell in love with this twin sized bed. Right now, it is set up as a single bed, but in a few years we can flip it upside down and it will become bunk beds! (You see the ladder up against the wall?) He absolutely LOVES it. We also added the canopy so it looks like he is seeing the stars at night! So cute!

Right after Shane got the bed put together

All tucked in his first night in the new bed. We got those nightlights too, which he loves because he can turn them on and off by himself. When he is done reading his books at night, he turns one of them off and leaves the other one on to sleep. We also got a large red distressed dresser. We're planning on doing his room in a variety of colors so we can switch things up as he gets bigger. I think we're going to paint the walls a light grass green and use the royal blue, red, orange and a little yellow. Luckily, we have 4 bedrooms in this house. Upstairs, we have my work room/guest bedroom, Logan's room, and then a spare room where we have all of Logan's old furniture.
We went to a Superbowl party last night and Logan has so much fun with the couple's daughter who was 8. He just loves big kids! Poor girl, he followed her around all night! And, he keeps asking to go see her again this morning.
I've been working pretty hard on my shop and fan page on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kalamity-Kids/129555538228.) I'm debating starting a Kalamity Kids blog....my main hesitation is that I'm not sure if I have the time to maintain my shop, FB page AND a blog, in addition to working on products and everything else that I do. But, I know that most people who have successful Etsy shops DO have blogs. It is a great way to spread the word about your products and also to connect with others who have blogs. So far, I feel like FB has been a pretty great business resource for me, although I feel ancient when I try to figure it out. I swear, I graduated college 7 years ago and there was no mention of FB then-Ha!
Let's see, what else?? I went to my orientation with the SPCA of Texas this weekend. (I have to be a volunteer with them in order to take Lucy to Medical City Children's Hospital.) Their location in McKinney is awesome! I was extremely impressed. They have a ton of land for livestock outside--they had lots of horses and donkeys--and great inside space. They did tell me that someone had come in and adopted all of the horses and donkeys that were in one of the pastures (I think it was about 10 of them) and was picking them up this week. They do daily playgroups for the dogs in this big open yard and also handfill Kongs with wet dog food and treats, then freeze them. Each dog gets a filled Kong every day. They have huge kitty rooms where the cats are just hanging out together--so fun! But, they get a lot of animals that have been confiscated due to mistreatment. They had 6 pit bulls they had just received, one of which was very pregnant, that were sooooo skinny. They had Mama Pit in the nice heated horse stable and she had a quite luxury suite all by herself. You could tell that everyone there truly loved the animals and that they worked hard to keep everything clean and nice for them. I was impressed!

A BIG morning!!

Logan went pee-pee in the potty this morning!!!!! I am so stinking proud of him!!!

Okay that's all for now =) We're just super excited!

Where do I begin?

This is the thing about a blog. If you blog consistently about your life, then you sort of have to keep it up or there are these holes where there is nothing. You start thinking that people are wondering what is happening to you or what is going on with your life, and why in heck you're not blogging. Are you all really thinking that? Who knows....but for some reason I always feel like that when things are going on that I just can't bring myself to blog about.

My Grandma Jean passed away Monday evening of a heart attack. This was terribly unexpected and just an awful shock to all of us. It's honestly still to hard for me to write about so I'm going to keep this brief. She was someone who was so special to me. She taught me how to sew when I was probably 5 or 6 years old and she is the main reason why I really can't remember life without sewing or creating. Every visit she would bring me her fabric scraps for me to use to make doll clothes or whatever else I was working on. (She recently confessed to me that she would go to the fabric stores before coming for a visit and purchase remnants for me if she didn't have enough scraps of her own.) We made everything from stuffed animals and dolls together in my younger years, to my bedspread and pillow shams for my very first college apartment. She was the one I'd call in when I was working on my design degree and stuck on a sewing project for class and couldn't get something just right. And, she was there cheering me on when my senior collection went down the runway.

Even though technically, she is my step grandmother, it never felt that way. She married my Granddad when I was about 4, a year or two after my Memaw passed away. Together, they have 9 children, many grand children and close to 20 great grand children. Many of you have heard me talk about my Granddad and his farm and how much I love it. It is a heart healing, magical place. I spent every spring break growing up there with them and would not have had it any other way. They are both so precious to me and I don't think my simple writing skills really do justice to the situation. My Granddad told Shane at her funeral last week that he was lucky to have had two great loves of his life. One he was married to 38 years and the other 27 years. If only we could all be lucky enough to experience that much love followed by loss, yet still be able to be grateful and joyful when reflecting back. My thoughts and prayers are with him and all of the others who knew and loved Jean so much. She will be forever missed.

House Pictures

I've been working on this post for awhile and have finally managed to get together the then and now pictures of the house. There are still many things on our to-do wish lists. Some of them are things we plan to do soon, some will not be done for awhile and some (like completely gutting our kitchen) will not be done for a long, long time. By posting these pictures, I am by no means saying that the house is perfect or even done. However, looking at these makes me realize just how far we've come in less then 2 short months. We have done everything ourselves with the only exception being the painting in the two-story family room and entryway. I've been extremely proud of Shane throughout all of this. I continue to be amazed by his talent and skills, not to mention the fact that he will not rest until a project is complete.

Here are some pictures to catch you up to where we are right now.

Much better now!

After my grouchy last post, I thought I should follow up and say that we are all doing much better now! Apparently, I was STILL sick. I was feeling considerably better then before (although is that really saying much since I had spent 4 days in bed?) and had taken all 10 days of my antibiotics, therefore assumed that I was okay. Then came Sunday morning when I woke up with pink eye. I knew immediately what it was after having it last spring, and I headed to a clinic right away. When I got there, I asked her to look in my throat since it had still been hurting. She told me that my throat and sinuses were still terribly swollen, and it was the infection (that I still had!) that caused my pink eye. I was also still running a fever! She gave me the drops for my eyes plus a z-pack and now, I am finally feeling much, much better. I guess that explains why Mommy was a little impatient last week, huh??

As for Logan, he's also doing much better. He finished his antibiotics today and seems to be back to his normal self. He is still very much in a "why??" phase, but it seems much more bearable when I'm feeling 100% healthy. I am also learning to divert his questions with questions. (For example, "Are we there yet?" "Does it look like we're there yet?" LOL)

I plan to post more house pictures soon. Shane completed my sewing workshop/studio and I finished painting all of the desk space and shelving today. It looks awesome!! I am so in love with my new space. I feel soooooo lucky to have this kind of space in the house and also to be making the time to do what I love! We have the laminate wood floors done in the living room and dining room, new paint in the dining room, half bath, upstairs bath and sewing/guest room. On our agenda for this weekend: garage and painting the kitchen and our bedroom if we're feeling ambitious.

Nighty night!

Looney Bin anyone?!?

We've had a busy few weeks since Christmas!! Sorry for my lack of blogging, but we've all been sick since the New Year and we've been focusing on getting well!

On Dec. 28 I turned THIRTY!! We had a wonderful dinner with my family. I really enjoyed being close enough to celebrate and have them over for dessert at our house! I guess this is/was a big birthday for me, but only in a good way. I celebrate every year and look forward to many more birthdays!

The morning after my birthday I woke up sick. I mean--sick. I didn't sleep much the night before and was soooooo achy and feverish. I was in bed all that day and the next before getting to the dr. on Wed. afternoon. Turns out, I had a bacterial throat infection which required antibiotics. The doctor said that my throat was incredibly swollen despite having my tonsils removed. He gave me a shot of antibiotics to give me a boost before we headed to the pharmacy. I was in bed for another few days after that. So much for celebrating the New Year with friends! This is the second year in a row that I have been incredibly sick right after my birthday. (Just in case you don't remember last year, you can read about it here: http://kamionedayatatime.blogspot.com/2009/01/soooooooo-sick.html) While I was sick, both Shane and Logan began coughing. They both went to the doctor this Monday and were both also put on antibiotics, Logan for an ear infection and Shane for bronchitis!! Now the entire family is on antibiotics and recovering. Hopefully, we're all on the mend and gearing up for a good 2010!

Logan is going through a major "why?" phase. I knew this was coming but I don't think that I could have possibly prepared for it. Everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) is followed by "why?" or "why not?" this is an actual conversation from this morning:

L: "Mommy! I want some milk please."
K: (heads to the kitchen to get milk)
L: "Mommy! What are you doing?"
K: "getting your milk"
L: "Why?"
K: "because you said you wanted some milk."
L: "Why?"
K: "I don't know why, Logan. You're thirsty?"
and it goes on....

Arrrrgggghhhhh.....it's exhausting. I have found myself resorting to "because I said so" more often then I care to admit. Not to mention the antibiotics that he's on are upseting his stomach which is giving him a terrible diaper rash. So, he fights me tooth and nail for every diaper change. Have you ever tried to wrestle a 38 pound toddler with no diaper and poop on his bottom? I have and it is NOT FUN. (Side note: Potty training??? Ever?? Will you ever happen??) He's also going through a little separation anxiety right now. I cannot leave the room without, "Mommy!! Where are you going?" (which, of course, is immediately followed by a "why?") We went to playgroup this week and he sat in my lap the entire time. It's just not like him....

I have to say that this stay at home mom thing is not for the weak!! I LOVE him dearly, he truly lights up my life. The majority of the time he has wonderful thoughts and cracks me up with his comments, but I have to say that sometimes, he simply drives me nuts.

In other news, Lucy and I are in the works to get on with Methodist City Children's Hospital in Dallas. We're really excited about this opportunity and getting back into the swing of things with our volunteering. Shane and I are working on getting my sewing room up and going ASAP which will be wonderful. I've had quite a few orders over the last couple months which is super exciting!! I can't wait until all my sewing stuff is organized and I can really get down to business here.

More Christmas

Here are some pictures of our Christmas celebration with Shane's parents. They gave Logan lots and lots of Thomas the Train stuff and he LOVES it!
