The party was a HUGE success and we're still recovering from it! Shane's parents and niece have been in town since the end of last week, so that has been fun. My parents were also able to come for the weekend. Logan has loved having all of his grandparents here! We have just had so much fun, but I still can't believe my baby is TWO!

Zoo

Birthday Week Pictures-Entry#2

On Wednesday we went with my playgroup to the Zoo and had a blast!! It was hot and muggy but we still had a ton of fun. Logan loved the tigers most and has been saying "tiger" ever since. We (of course) had to ride the train, which he also really enjoyed.

Here he is on the carousal
Logan hugging his good friend Connor. Aren't they cute??

Logan and I on the train (did I mention how hot and muggy it was? That's why I look soooo sweaty!) He did have fun on the train, but at this point he really wanted it to start moving!

Birthday Weekend Pictures

Birthday Week Pictures-Entry #1

We went to TX last weekend for Memorial Day and Logan's 2nd birthday. We drove in on Friday afternoon and were able to hit the big(er) city stores and do some shopping while Logan stayed with Memaw and Granddad. He is to the age where we didn't want him to see us buying his birthday presents. Not to mention, that I completely forgot how much easier it is to shop without a toddler in tow!!
Saturday we had a wonderful lazy day with my parents and Marty and Jill. We swam and grilled out. It was such a great day!! Unfortunatly, I have no pictures from this day...I'm hoping to get some from the family to pop in here soon. My camera was not cooperating at all. I have been so fed up with it that I got a new one on Sunday! I absolutly LOVE it and have taken over 700 pictures since then.

Sunday we spent the day with Shane's parents. Logan had a great time playing with them and our niece Tabi. Shane went in the attic and and retrieved more of his childhood toys for Logan. For some reason, he loves the original Little People and plays with them all of the time. Shane was able to find a TON that he didn't even remember that he had! They were both in heaven, lol.

Logan, Shane, Steve (Grandpa) and Kathy (Grandma)On Monday (Memorial Day and Logan's birthday) we had cake and let Logan open up his presents from us and my parents. His big gift from us was a new sandbox that Shane built in our backyard. You'll see many pictures of Logan playing in there in future blog entries :)

Just wanted to say that I promise to post some birthday pictures soon!! I haven't had time to download them into my computer yet, since we're getting ready for his party on Sat. But, I'll get them on here soon!

TWO

Two years ago right now I had no idea for what I was in for.  My contractions started around 1am. I can remember waking up and watching the clock and thinking, "Yup-10 minutes apart." (This was nothing new to me since I had been having regular contractions for several weeks. However, I began to get a little uneasy when 10 minutes turned into 8 minutes, and 8 minutes turned into 6 minutes.) I think it was around 4:45am and the contractions were around 5 minutes apart when I finally awoke my sleeping husband. I had quarantined him to the guest bedroom since pregnancy had made me such a light sleeper and I could not stand his snoring. I had finally decided that he should not be allowed to sleep while I was in so much pain!

As we were walking in circles around the living room and taking warm baths to try to ease the contractions (I was only 36 weeks so it was not "time" yet...) I began to wonder what my baby boy would bring? What will become of him and I? Will I love him as soon as he is born and know that he is mine? And, gasp...What will become of his Daddy and I? Will we turn into one of those couples who can think of nothing else to discuss but our child? Will there still be a 'me' in the equation of wife and mother? So many things were spinning through my head as my contractions got stronger and stronger.

Looking back over the last 2 years, I have been blessed to feel the joy that comes in knowing as soon as I saw him that, Yes, he is mine. And, the immediate knowledge that, without question, I would slay dragons (or NICU nurses) to make sure that he is healthy and happy.  I felt the pain of leaving a hospital without my baby boy and the joy of finally getting to bring him home. I have seen him grow from the tiniest little thing to this strapping little boy who is jumping off furniture. And every once in awhile, we have to stop and remember that all of this is truly amazing.

And, that couple-the optimistic one awaiting the birth of their first child-are still here. They had dinner tonight in a real restaurant and discussed life and changes and the beautiful, memorable ups and downs over the last six years of their marriage. If I could go back and talk to that woman pacing the floors and timing her contractions, I'd tell her to slow down and enjoy the ride. It might get bumpy but it sure is beautiful. You cannot plan for the highs or plan for the lows, but you will ride through them and you will be stronger and better for them. I know that these 2 years are only a drop in my bucket of parenthood. So, I only hope that when it is 22 instead of 2 and we're celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary, that I can look back on the years and know that we truly lived enjoying each day the way we have during these first few years of Logan's life. Because for that joy, I will always be eternally grateful. And, I do believe that if I could have had a crystal ball 2 years ago, it would have made labor that much sweeter.

First Ice Cream Cone

Tonight was the first time we've ever gotten Logan his own ice cream cone and let him go to town. He did so good!! I cannot believe that my baby will be TWO on Monday. He just looks so grown up in these pictures...

We're headed to TX tomorrow to spend Memorial Day weekend there with family. Our 6 year wedding anniversary is on Sunday. (Happy Anniversary, Honey!!) And, then Logan's big birthday is on Monday. We're having a party with his friends here next weekend. I know that will be a lot of fun!
Okay, off to pack and get ready to hit the road in the morning. I just had to share a few more pictures before he is actually a 2 year old....

Almost TWO!!

We are on the official count down until I have a TWO YEAR OLD!! I just cannot believe it. Where does the time go?!? He is constantly amazing me and makes everyday such a joy. The other day I went to the store to get his birthday invitations printed. On the way home I pulled one out and was looking at it. He could see it from his carseat in the back and said "Happy Birthday to me!!" OMG. It was so cute! He can count to 5 all by himself and can make it up to 10 with help. He knows all of his colors and loves to identify things by color. He thinks that he is a big kid and loves playing with the older kids on our block.
We had a wonderful weekend! We spent a LOT of time outside because the weather is finally sunny and pretty! Here's some pictures from planting flowers today.
Here he is playing with his watering can after watering the flowers

"Helping" to plant the flowers

This was my mother's day present. Shane and Logan gave me the swing and made the pathway to it. I think it turned out so pretty!

Organization

I consider myself an organized person. However, having an (almost) 2 year old makes everything a little bit more challenging. For example, yesterday we were getting ready to go to playgroup and I went to his shoe basket in his closet--this is where all of his shoes are supposed to be--and I found one navy sandal and one brown leather sandal. One of each. I mean, where did the other two go??? I wound up grabbing some sneakers and throwing them in the diaper bag. I didn't even put shoes on him until after playgroup when we were going into Kroger! Those of you who know me well, know that this lack of organization just drives me nuts. But, the frustrating thing is that we're not messy people. Shane is a neat freak in a LOT of ways, and I love to organize. So--where the heck are those shoes?? Currently, I'm searching for 3 Little People, a Sears receipt, a brown sandal, and a navy sandal. How does this happen when I save every receipt divided by month, have a husband that counts all of the Little People before turning in for the night (no-I'm not kidding,) and have a designated basket for Logan's shoes??

In the spirit of the conversation, I'll share a few things that have helped me to get and stay organized, despite the chaos of a 2 year old. Shane usually brings his lunch to work every day. I always said that I'd pack it for him, but I had a hard time remembering. Or, I would set aside a Tupperware container of leftovers in the fridge for him and it would get buried. He had no idea what I had put in there specifically for him (or even what was in there for that matter) when he was trying to get out the door before 7am every morning. Recently, I bought a small plastic basket from Target to be his lunch basket. This is a visual reminder to me when it's sitting empty in the fridge that I need to fill it for him before the next morning. (I'm never up at 7am unless it's absolutely necessary.) So, while I'm making lunch for Logan on Monday, I can make Shane's lunch for Tuesday and throw it in his basket. Or, when I'm putting away the leftovers from dinner, I can divide it into smaller portions and put one container in there. In the morning, Shane just pulls the basket out of the fridge and puts everything into his lunch cooler, grabs an ice pack, and he's good to go. This has been instrumental in helping me remember to get his lunch together, and helping him remember to grab it in the morning. Not to mention the money that it saves us when he doesn't go out to lunch every day.

Another thing that I LOVE are closet dividers from the container store. They hook over the top of your closet rack and you can stick labels on them. I use these in both mine and Logan's closets to keep the types of clothes separated. When Logan was a newborn, I had them all marked for sizes of clothing. Now, I have L/S shirts, S/S shirts, sleepers, jackets, too big and too small. (All pj's and pants are in his drawers.) When I'm pulling clothes out in the morning, and I see something he's outgrown, I just stick it behind the "too small" tab. This makes cleaning out his closet super easy. Every once in awhile, I'll pull things out from the "too big" tab and wash them to go in with the rest of his clothes. In my closet, I keep all my clothes divided by L/S, S/S, strappy, jackets, pants, capris, etc.

One more silly thing that I do is label all leftovers on the side of the Tupperware containers before putting them in my fridge . I keep a Sharpie and masking tape in my kitchen drawer just for this. Whenever something goes in Tupperware, I label what it is and the date on the side before I put it in the fridge. This makes cleaning it out easy and also helps us to see what is in there quickly without having to pull everything out.

Okay, listing all of these things out has made me feel a little better about the missing shoes...I'm sure they'll turn up eventually.

This week

This week has felt like an eternity...it's one of those weeks where blogging last Fri night feels like FOREVER ago. Saturday I had the dog evaluation at the hospital and was there from 9-5ish. It was a long day, but we did have several teams pass so that was great news. After I got home, we were hanging out on the couch and reading books with Logan when Booker let out one low bark. Shane went to the window and saw that our street was full of fire trucks, police and ambulances. I ran outside, immediately knowing that something was wrong with our good friends and next door neighbors, Jeannie and Billy. We soon got the terrible news that Billy was dead. It was truly one of the most horrible things that I have ever been through and I'm praying everyday for my neighbor and her family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as she begins the long grieving process. Billy was a wonderful man. Full of life and artistic and I know that he will be greatly missed.

We muddled through the week the best we could....Through any tragedy, I have to find a few positive things....One is, I was reminded of the major reason why I fell in love with Shane. He is such a good man. As we both worked to do any little thing that we could to support this family this week, I saw him do many things that he wasn't asked to do, simply because he knew it was a small way he could help out. I found myself admiring his strength and leaning on him in a way that I haven't in a long time. We also had the pleasure of keeping Jeannie's new puppy for the week. She was 2 pounds and just adorable. You know we're usually not small dog people, so it was a unique opportunity to live with a tiny dog. She was adorable and Logan loved her. This experience also made us see what wonderful neighbors that we have. I cannot tell you how many people told us that they ran out of their houses fearing for our little boy when they saw all of those emergency vehicles. They came to me many times throughout the week to see what they could do for Jeannie and her family. This has given us more of a sense of community in a tragic sort of way. Shane made the comment that we have experienced it all in AR now-birth and death.

I just haven't had it in my heart to come on here and write about all of the fun and wonderful things happening in our life this week. I felt that in some way, I had to pay tribute to this family first. Please continue to pray for them and put them on your prayer lists.

Mexico

Shane and I made it back safe and sound from Cancun. We flew into Dallas on Wed night and drove back to AR yesterday. We had a wonderful trip! Our agenda was: nap, relax, eat, nap relax eat....repeat. It was perfect! The picture above was taken in the pool and below you can see how big the waves were. The pool at the hotel was right next to the ocean, so you could hear the waves and see the beach while swimming. It was beautiful!
This was the view from our balcony...it was SO pretty!!

We did have a little scare with Logan right before we left. We drove into TX on Sat afternoon and Logan was doing great. He stayed awake the entire car ride and laughed and played. We got in and hung out at my parents for a bit and then went to have dinner at Shane's parents house. He did great over there and all seemed normal. He had a blast playing with some new toys from his Grandma and Grandpa. Then, we put him to bed back at my parent's house, and he woke up about an hour later crying. We went in and while Shane was holding him, I noticed blood on his pillow. I started inspecting him to see where he was bleeding and found that his right ear was full of blood and it was running down the side of his cheek. We were horrified and took him to the ER where they found his ear was too swollen to really see in there, but suspected that he had an ear infection which had caused his eardrum to rupture. He had no previous symptoms. No tugging on his ear or fever....he's only had one very minor ear infection in his life and that was just this March. The doctor assured us that this was common and not to worry. We were (of course) considering not taking our trip, but they convinced us to go on with our plans. My parents gave him the antibiotics and ear drops while we were gone, and we took him to his regular pediatrician today. She said that his ear was healing, but that it was a middle ear infection and rupture of his eardrum. She told us that middle ear infections can be very fast moving and that it does not hurt to manipulate or tug on the ear with this type of infection. This scares me to death, because how on earth do you know that they have an ear infection then?? Poor little guy! But, she said everything was healing right and he finished his antibiotics yesterday.
Well, I'm off to bed. I have a long day of dog evaluations ahead of me tomorrow. It's been a crazy day at home preparing for that and digging myself out of my email inbox!!
